Seems like there's some sort of "limp home" mode on transmission. I'm not sure what triggers it or how you get out of it. A filter and fluid change probably won't hurt. Also there is a "winter mode" which makes it start off in second. Is there a switch somewhere? I believe it looks like a snowflake--it could just be on (hense the dash light being on) and needs to be switched off, or perhaps it's a faulty switch.
