A little more information would be helpful. How many miles and what kind of condition is the rest of the car in? This is a fairly common canundrum. The way to look at this is that it costs money to drive, no matter how you do it. The choices are usually payments or repairs. If you had a car payment of $250 a month, as an example, it would cost you $3000 a year every year for five years. When you go the repair route the way you pay is more iratic-- you can often go for many months without making any payment. When you suddenly have a big repair you are essentially making several months payment all at once. In your case you're making a year or two's payments all at once. The question to ask is how much driving time will you get if you repair the car? If you can get a minimum of two years more out of the car, then it's worth doing. If you can get 3 or 4 years it's a pretty good deal. If the tranny is on it's last legs, the body has rust and the interior is shot it may not be worth it. But if it's a nice enough car that you want to drive it a few more years then it might make sense. There is no cheap way out of this situation. Also $5K sounds way high, you might check around and find some alternatives.
