Hood won't lock closed

My hood will not lock properly and I'm afraid it is going to pop open while I'm driving. The inside cable release works OK [had to fix that after hubby tried to open the trunk (yes, trunk) by pushing the handle forward] but after my last oil change I noticed the hood can be manually
opened the 1" or so needed to release the hood, without pulling the handle.
There is a big spring on the frame that it seems the hood should hook onto.
However on the hood itself where it meets with this spring there is just a hole with something inside that has threads (like a part should be screwed
into it) and this piece wiggles back and forth. Have I lost something? I've just scrolled through 1000's of posts and while many of you have had
'latch' problems I haven't found any about the underside of the hood. I was hoping to find a picture of what should be there. This just doesn't seem safe. TIA
