I've never put a car on jack stands because of the tires. Raising the car off of the ground helps air circulation under the car. Doing so and removing the wheels increases that circulation not just under the car but around the brakes. Ever touch the underside of a car that's in a garage when the temperatures have changed drasticly outside? You'd be surprised how wet a car can get underneath and that means rust. Getting a car off of it's suspension will also prevent the springs from sagging.
While on blocks the engine can still be run, even in gear if you're worried about seals. Brakes can be operated too. It's important that the car be on a level surface so the chassis is not twisted (Saabs don't have frames....sub-frame yes but no frame) and that the supports be sturdy. Raising the car also lessens the possibility of rodents. It's all good if done right!
