I have been doing some searches on previous posts and can't find any info that explain what I might be hearing. Any references to a previous post or new info would be great!

'98 900 SE 142000 miles

The AC compressor makes a noise that I can best describe as being similar to someone using an angle grinder while bearing down very hard. It's a deep, guttural grinding noise. But not like metal to metal contact in the compressor, not a bad bearing whine nor is it a rattling sound at all. Not sure if that makes any since but that is my best attempt at describing it.

-It's only when the compressor is engaged
-It is reflective of engine speed
-It only noticeable at idle, after 1500 - 1800 rpm the sound fades away rather quickly and the compressor sounds quite normal from inside the car.
-The air blows cold, although haven't put a temp gauge in the vents to see if the temp drop is what it should be.
-I have also checked the pressure at the low pressure port, it is border line between full and low. I have tried adding refrigerant but the system won't take any more, or at least not enough to be reflected on the gauge.
-To be honest it sounds very much like a compressor low on oil (which I have heard before)

Any thoughts?

Can anyone give me a basic run down of proper procedures for servicing and maintaining Saab AC systems? Specifically checking pressure, adding refrigerant and adding oil. I have serviced American domestic systems but am not sure if there are some particulars that I should know about Saab systems. Also a list of proper refrigerants and oils that can be safely used in Saab systems would be great.

My second question is notably simpler and related to the same above vehicle. I know the engine is the 204 but would any of the '98s have the full pressure turbo? If so, how do I find out which I have? Can anyone point me to or give me a visual description of the two different turbos?

Thanks to all!
