William. The symptoms you are describing meets the criteria of a failing Crankshaft Position Sensor (some people call them CPS, but in Saabs CPS is the acronym for Camshaft Position Sensor - which is performed by the DIC). I believe the Crankshaft Position Sensor's acronym is CKP. You can do a search...
As far as I know, a bad NSS would not even allow the engine to crank/turn.
A poor running AIC, would more likely allow the car to "catch," but not continue running (unless to played with the throttle as No Snaab stated), but the engine would "fire."
Do the resistance test that William gave, or get some cooling spray and when the car doesn't start, spray a little on the head of the sensor to cool it down - NOT TOO MUCH, YOU'RE JUST COOLING IT DOWN NOT TRYING TO FREEZE IT.
If it starts right up, suspect the sensor.
