Out of gas - check engine light - should I worry?

So yesterday I ran out of gas in my 2002 9-3 SE automatic (about 35k miles) for reasons that can only be classified as stupid. Luckily we were only about the length of a football field away from a gas station so I was able to quickly add gas, drive to the gas station, fill it up and drive home. The check engine light came on, but the car seems to run fine. The trip home was about 80 miles, with a kayak on top of the car, avg speed about 60, ~27mpg, which is less than usual (I suspect due to the kayak on top of the car - 1st time with boat on top).
I checked it again today and the check engine light is still on. The start was a little bit rougher than usual, but only slightly..the sort of thing you would only notice if you were looking for it.
I realize I have to take it to a dealer/repair since I don't have the experience to fix a real problem, but what could be the cause of the light if there are no symptoms? If the car is running could it be the catalytic converter?? The fuel injectors? The fuel pump? something else? Any idea on cost?
argh
