...so I'll be watching this thread. Mine's a 2001 9-3 base auto with 116k. Here's what I've learned so far:
Typically, on the first cold start of the day, the car will crank normally and sputter a couple of times before dying. Occasionally, it will sputter for several seconds (after releasing the key) and then finally catch. Most of the time it starts perfectly on the second try, revving to about 1200 RPM and gradually settling at 950-1000. There have only been a couple times that I've had to try a third attempt. As with yours, warm starts are no problem, and it usually even starts fine after sitting for 8+ hours at work during the day.
I've recently replaced things like spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, and fuel pressure regulator with no difference. I've swapped the direct ignition cassette for a known good one and checked to make sure no coolant was leaking into the cylinders while the car sat overnight. I have also tried different brands and grades of gas, as well as running a bottle of Techron in my last tank.
I always pause after turning the key to 'on' and make sure I hear the fuel pump run for a second or two. Sometimes I've turned the key on and off repeatedly before cranking, but nothing seems to make the car any more likely to start on the first try.
Last night I bought a fuel pressure tester gauge to see if (a) my pump is putting out the right pressure, and (b) if the pressure is being maintained at the fuel rail. When I first turned the key, the pressure jumped to about 40 psi (normal) but then gradually dropped to zero. I need to get some plumber's tape to make sure the gauge fittings are sealed tightly, as it did leak a bit of gas at first, but it's possible that a bad check valve could be causing the leak-down.
I hope this gives you a few items to look into, but obviously I still haven't found my problem yet, so any other suggestions will be appreciated!
