Yes, it seems like the oil filter is getting the debris from the sprockets and not passing it on through the engine.
It is a chance though that if the engine has been allowed to run with low oil pressure and oil starvation for too long, it might have scored the bearing races.
When the oil pan is off, it might be good to loosen the rear connecting rod and main bearing to look at them and also check the cylinders for scoring and heat damage.
