I have a 97 900NG with about 125K miles. I suspect my head gasket has finally gone -- starting to see oily residue in the coolant, and the oil, while brand new (one week old), perhaps is taking on a mocha color.
Decided to pull my valve cover to see what the inside looks like while I decide how much to invest in repairs. A bit worried about wear to the timing chain guides as well.
Removing the valve cover was ok. The fun part was borrowing a rubber mallet from my dad I had used as a toy 30 years ago. Finally figured out what I am supposed to do with it. Gasket was replaced at 100K by a indy and they made a real mess of it -- near the timing chain side the gasket is all melted.
The inside look ok to me. I see black marks by the timing chain, but the rest is more orange than black. Wanted to get everyone else's opinions before moving forward.
What the best way to get the valve cover back on? The PCV oil pipe is kind of in the way, and I'm not sure of the best way to get around it. Also, does the throttle cable from the cruise control run in front of the dipstick, or behind it?
Here are the pics:

Hope the links works..first time on that as well.
