I would think that it is necessary to release the control arm from the sway bar in order to pop the ball joint out of the hub. Unless you are just replacing the ball joint boot, you'd need to free the control arm from the sway bar anyway. And even if you were just trying to replace the boot and regrease the ball joint, you would what to unhook from the sway bar because that whole system fits together pretty tight. It would be a pain in the *ss to try and do it otherwise.
