My first DIY brake job (pad&rotors)- what should I do?

Car: '97 900SE
Project: Rear pads and rotors + "whatever else I should do while I'm in there"
My skills: Competent DIY (replaced exhausts, most all fluids, rebuilt clutch master and slave cylinders on classic 1990 Saab900, front end swap from donor car)
So I'm writing looking for advice on what I should do 'while I'm in there' and any special tricks/tips for my first brake job. I know I need pads and rotors, burned through the pad and bolts have eaten up the rotor on the right rear, so it's obvious the route I need to take.
Typically I have left brake jobs 'to the professionals' since it is a safety system. Now the economic times have caused me to evaluate my competency/confidence and I think I'm going forward with doing a brake job myself. I have friends who have done their own brake jobs for years who will help make sure I don't screw up... but they're not Saab guys.
So I'm specifically looking for any tips/tricks/concerns that would be more specific to the car in front of me.
1) Parking brake is loose, should I replace shoes as well?
2) Any tips for caliper maintenance/inspection?
3) Special tools required/recommended? (hammer drill, etc)
4) Recommended list of parts I should anticipate replacing while I'm in there? (should I get new set pins, new caliper hardware kit, new parking shoes kit, etc)
Any and all advice is appreciated!
