E85 has much higher octane numbers

Ethanol has a higher octane number something around 130... and E85 is something like 105... so while it contains less energy per gallon, you can compress it more and a higher percentage of the energy out... and that can lead to more total energy out than straight gas. The main reason most E85 flex fuel vehicles get worse economy is that they are set up to run fine on 87 octane gas and don't take advantage of the higher E85 octane. Perhaps the higher compression of a Saab engine works very well with E85.
So when you hear the talking heads on TV or radio complain about the lower fuel economy with E85, it only means they don't know what they are talking about.... which comes as no surprise with most tv or radio talking heads.
