I would suggest a set of crossover speakers. The speaker cable goes to a unit that splits the signal between a tweeter and woofer.

Though if you do go this route I would also use better cable from the amp. Then you would have to run a wire through each door to the speakers. The tweeter would replace the speakers in the dash. Though I did have to cut a masonite piece to mount them in so I could use the screw position from the original speakers.

I think I put in some cheaper Infinities, probably the cheapest crossovers that Circuit City had (knowing me) and they do sound better. Though I also added a cheap Alpine amp. The speakers was the easy part, the amp was a pain to hook up to the stock deck.

Shouldn't have to worry about the speaker depth, there is plenty of room.
