One of the issues you will run into trying to dye it black is getting even coverage. Another would be the dye bleeding into the interior of the car. I would think that it would smell for a while too. Part of the problem stems from the type of material the top is made out of. An all cotton top would dye easier and a synthetic or blend would not hold a dye very well if you are changing colors as opposed to the same color.
I would call a specialty business and ask for input.
I might try it first if it isn't that expensive, but I think it would be a lot quicker to just drill out the rivets and install a used one. Dye is not easy to use on any fabric let alone a very nice Saab convertible.
