Steven, I know it sounds like something from an early Audi quattro but I have had the car for 3 years and it only started making this noise 2 weeks ago. Within secs of noticing this the warning light was also on.
Car has had one previous owner (not the sort to uprate it) I am sure it does not have an after market blow-off or dump valve.
Noise is not very loud, generally drowned out by road noise above 50mph.
Thanks for the description, my limited understanding was that a faulty valve may leave the high pressure with no route to escape, staying in the system and leading to turbo damage.
Could be that there is a leak/pipe off as well as a failed valve.
I have tested as many connections as I can see but I'll get a better look this weekend.
