If you know that the ring on your driveshaft is split then that is undoubtedly your problem. There is no testing that I know about short of sending it to BBA or similar for them to test.
I might suggest disconnecting the ECU—the electrical, not the hydraulics—to make your braking predictable and possibly save it from damage of producing an error similar to my experience. If you get snow and ice I would certainly be concerned about unpredictable braking patterns in those conditions.
You should be able to do a search on the various boards for ABS ECU issues. If you go to the BBA site they also have good info on removal or at least the location and you can disconnect the wiring so it doesn't kick in on braking. I covered the electrical connections with plastics bags to keep them clean.
