My 99 9-3 convertible developed a fun problem today. When I turned the key to start the car it felt different... just turned all the way to the right with ease, and started right up. There was no "Spring tension" to turn against from the on to the start position, and when I released the key, it remained in the start position. I turned it back towards on... the engine kept running... sid and guages acted normally... but no blower motor (and no A/C in 90 degree weather) and the window switches were dead... along with the turn signals and horn. I went back home, and sprayed silicone in the lock assembly (have to do that about once every six months, when the switch doesn't pop back up when removing the key) but that didn't change the feel of the switch. Thought I was going to have to cancel the rest of my day (no way I'm driving two hours in the heat, with no blower... and the windows up.) Eventualy I found that if I positioned the key just right, after starting the car, everything else worked fine. I made a two hour drive south, and returned with no problems... But it's no longer "Spring loaded" and I have no idea when or whether the key is going to bump itself to a partially functioning position while driving. I'm not too excited about spending most of monday behind the wheel, not knowing whether the key cylinder or the ignition switch is the problem... and if the whole thing is going to fall apart, leaving me stranded two hundred miles away from home.
Do I need to replace the key cylinder? The Ignition Switch? Or do I need to pull something apart, and clean it up?
