In my experience and those of past posts...yes it will eventually fail to start.

Check out TheSaabSite for good info and prices. http://www.thesaabsite.com/900new/NG900ignition.htm
It is about 2/3s down the page. Looks about $150.

It is a frustrating pain in the ass to replace but if you take your time and pay attention to the steps you can do it. An automatic could take 2 hours or so. A manual tranny will take longer because it is more involved to get at the underneath of the—what is shown as the $300 part that holds the key cylinder.

My advice would be to buy the Haynes manual and search the internet for any extra advice. You should be able to search these posts too for helpful instructions. I'd remove the driver seat at least to give you room. The book explains to remove the gear shift cable in the manual tranny model to be able to better get at the part. I didn't and was able to do it but I wouldn't recommend it. I think it took me 4-6 hours. I also had a used one that I installed so if you can get a used one...might be worth the gamble.

On the plus side, gives you an opportunity to clean all that grime out of the parking brake lever opening. In my case it was dog kibble. And you could always install a trick push-button starter.
