If you aren't able to service your brakes yourself, you may not realize brake shops rip their customers off, if they don't they can't make any money. When you take your car to a brake shop they will almost always tell you Calipers,Pads,Rotors; they call it C.P.R. If the car has any kind of mileage on it, they're going to hit you for hoses as well, and if one axle needs service they'll always try to sell you on a full car job, even though rear brakes generally wear three times as long as front brakes. The likelihood that any particular car actually needs calipers or rotors is slim to none. If brake pads are replaced before the linings are completely gone, you're not going to damage your rotors and the only time they'll need any service is if they are warped or become deeply grooved. Minor grooves (<.05") are inconsequential, and normal wear, the brake pads will seat into normally worn rotors within a few hundred miles. The ONLY two reasons to replace a caliper or wheel cylinder is in the event it's sticking or leaking; and in nearly all cases those problems can be repaired in minutes with a cheap hone and an inexpensive rebuild kit, and they can be serviced/replaced individually with zero consequences. So, to speak of costs for brake services says nothing of the actual value of the service. This is partly why I can easily do a full brake job for a fraction of what a brake shop can, the other part is I'm not a shop and have no overhead; and overhead is the real reason brake services cost as much as they do.
