I just did this today (10/25/09), mine was squeaking/birdy.
1. After you've gained access to be able to grasp the sensor fan assembly; when you go to remove the fan assy (pushing it INTO the dashboard), the clips at the top and bottom must be shimmed a bit with a slim screw driver. Then it just slides back, otherwise it won't move.
2. Remember and mark which way was up. I rotated mine 180 degrees which usually makes the noise go away - in my case it didn't, I have to bite the bullet for a new one.
3. Don't take apart the fan assembly after you pull it. I did, and now the impeller/fan won't move as freely as it did. Still makes the noise though.
If you do take it apart be gentle.
4. Don't know about oil or graphite, both have their disadvantages as
lubricants on this sensitive piece. I used silicon.
Good luck, WS.
