The same thing happened to me last May. I was in a fender-bender with my 1997 900s hatchback (non-turbo, 160K miles.) No mechanical damage, just body work. The estimate to fix was at least $3000 (car was 13 years old.) The insurance company gave me two choices: have it fixed and they will cover $1500 of the repairs - I would need to cover the rest (at least an additional $1500), and then get the title changed to "salvage"; or give the car to the insurance company, and they would give me $1900 for it.
It was basically a no-brainer. The blue-book for a base 1997 900s in "good" conditions was only about $900. I took the $1900 and bought a brand new 2009 9-3 SportCombi.
I've been thinking of a new Saab for a few years, funny how it took an accident to get me into one!
(Hey, at least no one was hurt, and very minor damage to the other vehicle, an SUV.)
