I don't know about Viggens, but when I was doing my base 9-3 struts I noticed a crack where yours broke apart. I got a junk yard unit and finished up.

Decided to take the old one apart anyway to see what was going on and found that what happened was that over time, the strut housing rusted and flaked away on the outside. What I though was a crack, was actually the internal threads for the gland nut coming through - the housing had rusted and flaked away to the point where the threads were coming through the metal!

I would say to others to check the housing periodically, as I would never have noticed it if it weren't for the fact that I had to pull the struts to replace the mounts and decided to do the cartridges as well...

If they are the same, the only tough part is getting the old gland nut off with all the rusting - I found it easiest to use an air hammer with a hammer bit against a corner - shot the old gland nut to hell, but the new strut cartridges came with new ones anyway.

I just used Monroe Sensa Trac because my wife doesn't drive hard at all and others on the board have had good opinions about them. I like them - can't really tell the diff from stock for the way we drive.

Here's a tip that you can take or leave also. When I put the new gland nut on, I used a little blue loctite on the bottom of the threads of the nut, and a little anti seize at the top. The loctite ends up going through and at the bottom to prevent the nut from backing out, then it gets to the anti sieze at the top which is where the rusting occurs that locks the nut into the housing and makes it so tough to get out (no rusting occurs at the bottom of the threads as they are not exposed).
