See if you can get a service history

May be hard, but if the owner is local it may be doable. If you can determine that the car has been well cared and a good Saab indy says it's OK, then just work on the price. Which, if you find the car has been serviced well, isn't all that bad.
I bought a '99 9-3 SE with almost 150K on it last summer for my #2 daughter. I knew the previous owner (a neighbor) and he gave me the full service records. All the work was done at the same indy I use and the guy was compulsive about it. The car was in superb shape and is fine. I paid $3500-- what some here say was too much. But the car runs, looks and drives as if it has under 100K on it.
There are used cars and there are used cars. You get one that's been as well maintained as you'd do it yourself and it's worth paying more for it. For your use it should be fine, but it can likely do a lot more than 5K a year.
