When you start the car when the engine is cold, do you let the pump prime for a second or 2 first, or do you just crank immediately? My car has a fairly new in-tank pre-pump (less than 2yrs old) and I still have to let the fuel rail prime before I crank it or else it has a hard time catching.
Either that could be it, or maybe you have developed a small leak in the fuel line inside the tank at that half-tank level...? kinda like if you had a pin-sized hole half way up in a straw you were trying to drink out of...
