There is a tube (part # 91 75 696) that can work loose and cause low oil pressure. When you take the sump off, its right there. It will probably wiggle a bit. It it is in place tightly, if it is leaking, it will cause low oil pressure. Its hard to describe but easy to see with the sump off. Look at it in EPC, it will make sense.
I did a similar operation to a 99 9-5 last winter. Engine was noisy but still ran. Turned out #4 piston was self destructing. Plenty of sludge in the pan and timing cover area, none on the cam caps, and the cam area looked pretty clean. The pickup was pretty ugly. I just replaced #4 piston with a used one, mic'd the bore, honed it and put new rings on the replacement piston. I replaced all the bottom end bearings too. Its been running great for the last 20k. I also modified the pickup by removing the screen and replacing it with the type of screen in the old 900. It has much bigger holes so it will never clog again.
