Is the top in good shape? New motor will run about $1200+ installed although refurbs can be had for less. Not sure how you feel about putting as much more into the car as the sale price.
When was the clutch last done? My 96 had 2 clutches break (not wear out, the pressure plate broke). Lots of other possible issues like the flex pipe for the downpipe/cat, radiator fan resistor failure cooking the A/C, etc. When the second clutch broke I sold it to a salvage yard and bought a '99 vert - A/c hadn't worked in a while and there was some rust on the lower body panels. I had 235,000 on the clock and still enjoyed driving it. I had a beefier rear subframe brace and the 6 point subframe brace up front. Definitely do the rear brace, for < $100 it makes a huge difference.
I'd see if I could negotiate a firm price on getting the top working so I knew more about the price.
Good luck,
Ian
