Hi,
So going to perform 'my' (not the car's) first Manual Transmission Fluid change. - '97 SE 5spd on 2.0T. Closing in on 140k, don't remember when last trans flush done (would have to look through prior owner records) but at least 20k and 3 years ago - ie before I bought it.
I've read up, and understand the process of double-flush with the 0063 fluid, but still have a few additional questions for those willing to help a pseudo-newby.
1) Is the drain-plug something that gets gunked up or broken often? Should I purchase replacement part and swap out pre-emptively like is recommended for brake rotor set screw?
2) How do I dispose of MTF? I know older C900's used motor oil, so could dump w/oil change, but this stuff is different... would Indy Mech. just take it? If I use normal oil change pan, does that mixing mess anything up so mechanic wouldn't take it? (like normal oil, they ask if gas got mixed in, etc).
3) Any recommendations on what to look at/for in oil for indications of health of transmission?
4) I'm currently planning just a flush, but any strong reason I should consider replacing gaskets or other items?
Any tips always appreciated!
