As the other posters have said you're a long way from needing a new car. Belts and tensioners can go unexpectedly, had it happen. You'd have to spend a lot on repairs to come close to what even a modest car payment adds up to, not to mention that new cars still need maintenance. Repairs hit in a random way--you might get two or three in a row and then nothing for a long time. Another trick to owning older cars that negates the worry about being unreliable is to rent a new car when you take a long road trip. It's all a lot cheaper than car payments.
