First, thanks to all the references made available on this site and others. Especially photos from 'fix my saab' site was very useful.
My car has been running cool with the stuck-open thermostat. Engine temp gauge has been lower than 9 o'clock position and sometimes erratic depending on the outside temp and the car's speed. These are the symptoms of failed thermostat.
Don't know about other 9-3's but on Viggen the space was very tight to loosen three bolts (10mm and 2x13mm) on the thermostat housing without removing other parts. But with right tools it's a 20 minute job. Two perfect tools are channellock pliers to grip the upper radiator hose clamp and box ratcheting wrench for the bolts on the housing. Even with the assortment of acrobatic extensions, sockets don't work well or at all. And needle nose pliers to grip the hose clamp doesn't work half as well as the channellock.
Steps:
1. Locate the upper radiator hose from the top rear left corner of the engine. The thermostat housing is where the hose is attached to the engine. Loosen the clamp and pull out the hose from the housing. Let the coolant drain from the hose unless already doing the coolant flush.
2. Loosen two 13mm bolts on top and bottom of the housing and 10mm bolt on the bracket in the middle of the housing.
3. Slide the housing cover out. Take the thermostat out and put new one with rubber gasket in with the bleeding hole on top.
4. Wipe the cover and housing mating surfaces clean. Tighten back the bolts but do not over-tighten.
5. Put the hose back on. Clamp. Run the engine and add coolant as needed.
