As you read in the audio guide, the door speakers are driven by a separate amp that sends only the lower frequencies. So, if you want to stick with that existing amp and just replace the old (likely torn) speakers, you can either go with 6.5" woofer speakers or use that suggestion of clipping the wire to the tweeter. That is not something I had thought of but it should work and full range speakers are available in more variety and price points than woofers. The thing I would be careful of is to make sure that the full range speakers do not have the tweeter protruding too far above the surface of the main speaker cone (models differ based on the tweeter design, if it can pivot, etc.).
Any speaker from a name brand that you put in there will likely sound better than the original OEM speakers just due to better quality materials today. Anything $70/pair or up should be fine. Some people like Kenwood, Pioneer, Infinity, JBL, etc. Since you will be using them for the lower frequencies, read reviews on speakers to find ones that are said to have good bass response.
If you follow the instructions on the Saab Audio Guide, putting new speakers in the doors is not a hard DIY project if you are handy with tools. (Let's put it this way, it no harder than installing a ceiling fan, and actually a bit easier.)
