02 Viggen head gasket and cold start issues Posted by Viggen Aero [Email] (#977) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Viggen Aero) on Tue, 8 Mar 2011 11:51:45 In Reply to: Block warmer? n/m, John Myers, Fri, 4 Mar 2011 15:27:17 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I confirmed my head gasket on my 02 Viggen with 52 K is is gone. I sent the head to the machine shop on Monday. Very strange problem- I was having cold start problems. The car would finally start and run seemingly fine. Lots of white clouds/ condensation from exhaust. It was hard to tell if it was condensation or vaporized coolant, due to the very cold winter we had in Mass. The coolant overflow bottle would slowly drop down. But I also had a very small leak from my radiator drain plug- now fixed.
I checked compression and it was low when engine was cold. I appears that the low compression was causing the cold start issues. Finally after cranking long enough, it built up enough compression. But does that even make sense?? I had ruled out EVERY other likely cause for cold start problems. I had 30 -35 PSI fuel pressure, and good spark from a know good DIC, etc. I spoken to several Master SAAB techs about the problem. They said all of the things I checked were right on. And they couldn't come up with anything else to check, except saying to bring it to a dealer to check it with a Tech II. The only scenario that one tech mentioned was that maybe my ECU needed a re-flash.
I know my Coolant temp sensor went bad. And I took longer to correct an easy, cheap, and quick thing to fix, than I should have.
Is the cooling fan tied into the coolant temp sensor? I'm thinking it is and maybe my head is warped, rather than just the gasket. I am waiting to hear back from the machine shop.
