Crank Position Sensor

I was just wondering, will a bad crank position sensor always trip the check engine light, or is it possible for it to go out without the CEL coming on? I had mine go out on my 2002 9-3 SE about 5 years ago, and thought that it had triggered the CEL, but can't remember. My car has recently recently given me the same symptoms as it did 5 years ago (died on me while driving, sputtered as if the engine was getting no gas, and now the starter kicks but it wont turn over. Changed the fuel filter and still no dice with it starting.) but I the CEL hasn't turned on.
Should I change the CPS again? Is it common for them to go out every 5 years or so? I appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
