K & N or paper?

Hey Gang,
When I first got my first 9-3 everyone suggested I use a K & N air filter. And it seemed all Saabers on this site used them and univerally agreed that it added hp and also amplified spool up(and it seemed to ring true on my ride). But after reviewing some posts now it seems like the school of thought on these types of "high performance" filters has changed. It seems like paper is the new norm. Is this true? I am due for a new air filter and was considering a K & N(since I have used them in the past). FYI, My last ride was a Passat with the 1.8T and unless you modified your airbox or got a whole new air intake with the cone type filter it was suggested just to use paper. So I never ever got a K and N for that. But both of my other SAABs(and my Nissan and a Subaru I owed all had them). What are your thoughts? Is it needed? Does anyone have a "high performance" and see/hear results on increased hp and better spool up. BTW; My new ride is a 2003 9-3 SE vert. Alexandros
