Can't select reverse with car running

Hey everyone thanks in advance for reading this and passing along any advice or ideas.
1996 900S convertible (102,xxx mi, cable clutch, 2.3L). Just had a clutch job done a couple weeks ago (the whole shebang--clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, new manual adjust cable). Upon receiving the car, the shifting was very notchy and rough and I could only select reverse with the engine off (I could select reverse with the car running prior to the clutch job). I left it with the mechanic and they did an alignment, which helped a little, but said I needed the updated shifter linkage and a new shifter. (This is my 2nd Saab, and never had these shifting problems--my previous was a 94 900S 170,xxx)
Just got a call from my mechanic--they put in the shifter linkage and updated shifter. Shifts great (gears 1-5) but still no reverse while the engine is running. I haven't picked up the car yet, as after spending all this money I at least want to know what the culprit is (after all, I bought the shifter and linkage so I could get reverse while running). I like to do some work myself, but there are some things you can't do in your apartment parking lot.
I've seen many posts about reverse problems, but didn't see anything about this. Has anyone ever had this experience before? I can live with selecting reverse only with the car off (makes parallel parking a pain), but I would love to fix it if I can. Thanks again for any helpful tips/ideas. First time poster--love this forum! :)
