Fluids for 1999 9-3 Automatic Convertible? Posted by Gary Stottler [Email] ![]() ![]() |
All,
I am a newbie as far as working on these "new" cars, you will usually find me on the 99 BB. However, I am doing an engine swap in a friend's 1999 9-3 Convertible (~90K miles) "I was doing 80 in the left lane and suddenly lots of smoke came from under the hood and the oil light came on". On closer inspection, we found that the #1 rod bearing cap had departed from the rod and exited the block behind the PS pump, but not before it broke the pin out of the piston, sticking it a the top of the bore and bending the valves. BIG paperwieght. The oil pickup was probably 2/3 plugged, I thought that only happened on newer motors?
Anyhow, the "new" motor only has 70K and has a freshly cleaned oil pickup and a 1-year warranty.
Question: The car is getting all new fluids and I need to know: 1) What ATF do these use (Dexron 3? or?)? 2) What Power Steering fluid? (yes, I was a wimp and pulled the pump to make it easier to get at the AC compr mounting bolts).
Any advice is greatly appreciated, it's a decent car with 5 good years in it yet at least, so want to give it a good full 90K service and all fresh fluids in the process.
Thanks in advance!
