Rats! I was hoping it was just an exhaust leak, but your diagnosis seems very reasonable, since it happened immediately upon sharp acceleration. Something broke.
Also, the sound is from the far left passenger side of the engine...where I suspect #4 is.
Question #1: How did these large clearances develop? Simple wear? What can I do to prevent it in the future?
Question #2: What is the remedy? I know "New Piston," but what else is involved? Is the block obviously damaged at this point? What else would be good to take care of (preventive maintenance) while the engine is cracked open? Or, is this is a situation where I say goodye to the bottom half of the engine and source one from a low-mileage Aero?
Okay, I've lost count of my questions.
What damage am I doing by driving it? Is there a catastrophic risk I am taking?
It damages my ego to drive it, I'll tell you that!
