I'd be very leery of using silicone on a valve cover gasket. In the hands of a practiced pro it's no doubt fine. In my limited experience I've seen shards of silicone material inside an engine where doesn't belong. My neighbor mechanic uses Permatex 518. It's handy to have around. It's good for shrunken tail light gaskets and other things needing a gasket material that stays pliable.
