When repair cost exceeds value of car, they sell or donate them for very little. Not an easy job. You pay more for a Saab on parts and labor than say a Saturn SL-1, which has the same transverse powertrain layout. Platonoff has a good picture summary of what job entails for NG900 / OG9-3 cars.

You might want to try "service mechs" link at top of page to find competent shops to compare repair prices. Also have places like HomeAdvisor, Angie'sList, and CarTalk. Watch out for Craigslist so-called mechanics.
