To expand on your suggestion, I think the best bet for an older car is to befriend a mechanic who does side work after hours. You'll pay half the price for labor and the mechanic still probably makes more than he makes at work.
If they haven't done this specific job before, then for sure help them out by hunting down the right parts and any juicy details from your favorite forums site.
Due to insurance issues, few shops allow any side work on site. So you'd probably bring it to his house and he'd work on it over a couple evenings or a weekend. Also you don't have to limit yourself to someone who works at a dealership or a shop. I can say I know someone who works for a school district maintaining facility vehicles, another who fixes delivery trucks for one of the two major delivery companies, another who does a very specific auto repair job all day and likes to expand his scope after hours....
