oil releated failures (long)

My observations of oil related failures are mostly confined to oil control piston rings and compression piston rings that are coked into the piston grooves. These rings are then dead, and oil consumption and compression loss follows. This is my motivation to use synthetic oil. I have had to remove too many piston rings with a screwdriver and a hammer when doing engine rebuilds. The rings which are remove in this fashion come out in several pieces. Sometimes you can see where part of a compression ring getting coked into place caused the ring to break where the part that was free met the part that was stuck. Rings cracked in this fashion can cause cylinder scoring or uneven wear. New rings can then have trouble seating in such cylinders.
I have seen evidence of rings sticking with dyno oil in carefully maintained modern vehicles, as late as 10 years ago. I have an expectation that modern dyno oils are much improved in the last decade, but I have not had the pleasure of an engine rebuild for a long while.
So my observed oil related failures are of thermal breakdown and not a lubrication failure in the classic sense. I have also seen evidence that synthetic oil allows some existing coking to break up and let things get free again. I have seen oil additives for freeing sticking rings work to allow a smoking pig to run properly again.
