When the clutch petal is pressed down, there throw out bearing and pinion shaft support bearings are working as designed. When the clutch is engaged, both bearings have zero wear as the inner and outer races are turning at the same rate.
These bearings are inexpensive, but it takes around 5-600 $US of labor to replace them. There have been one or two cases of throw out bearing failure.
So it is considered good practice to not wait for traffic signals with the clutch petal down. If you think about it, by doing this, you probably are increasing the duty cycle on those bearings by factor of 100X's.
I think that in some vehicles and older designs, the throw out bearings were a know weakness which required that you not abuse their limited service lives.
It is also important to not be resting your foot in the clutch so that is it depressed slightly. This will induce some dry steel on steel wear of the throw out fork against the throw out bearing collar, or be spinning the bearing. So don't rest your foot on the petal at a traffic signal either.
