Lots of good advice below. If you are going to get only one torque wrench, get a clicker. The beam type (scale) units can be impossible or difficult to read in many situations. When torquing to higher values, you can also be using a lot of body strength and be in a awkward posture. Getting your face over the scale can be quite a contortion. Then if you are not properly positioned, you will get parallax errors. Some times you will find yourself shaking and the reading is then ???
Yes, changing the setting frequently can be a pain. For things with stages of tightening, you can often stage by feel and final torque with the click. As stated by others, a very good skill to have.
Things like spark plugs are something you should learn to do by feel. They so not have to be very tight. The spec in spark plugs is to prevent some steriod junkie from stripping the threads. Use a torque wrench and note how it feels and how the resitance ramps up. Then try it with a regular wrench, then qualify it with the torque wrench.
Tirerack.com has one that they can ship with your new tires for $30.00
