The cap that I had was not vented and was the one that would be used with a 96+ model year with ODB-II. That is why with those vehicles you can get CELs (check engine lights) if the cap is not tight. The vented gas caps would raise CEL's. So the ODB-II vehicles must maintain a slight pressure or vacuum on the fuel tank, and detect if that is not achieved. So I would expect that there would be a pressure difference when opening the cap on the ODB-II Saabs.
The one that I now have has a recess on the end, to protect the, rubber gromlet that covers a small hole. The rubber gromlet has a thin flexable top that acts as a one way valve. With rising temperatures, expanding gas is then vented via the charcoal canister.
The orignal cap fell apart, as it had cold weld failures from molding in an insufficiently warmed up injection die. Can you say quality control? The the dealer in London Ont gave me the incorrect replacement cap.
At the dealer's yesterday, they observed that there were some signs of the tank deforming inward as a result of the fuel pump creating a partial vacuum. Obviously this effect was limited or the problem would have been severe.
I had a Volvo 264 once, that when you opened the fuel cap, there was a very large pressure difference and a gust of air and gas fumes blew out.
