You can't go wrong with Mobil 1 10w30 year round. The Purolator 'Pure One' is a very good filter. The Mobil 1 filters are a bit better but quite expensive. Stay away from Fram and house brand filters.
Use only 6 point sockets on the drain plug bolt. You can use the same copper washer for years if you wrap it in plumber's teflon tape each usage.
When you drain the oil, drain the filter housing for 1/2 hour. After it runs a slow drip for a while, an air lock somewhere will break, and the oil will then stream quite a bit then settle once again to drips. You will not get that done any place else but at home. Then drain the sump one again, if you had to close it up while working on the filter.
There is no big deal in switching oils. The first crankcase full of synthetic will release deposits which built up with dyno oil. So perhaps you will see this first does of synthetic oil getting darker than the others will.
The engine should be warm, but not so hot that you are in danger of getting burnt by hot oil. If you don't have an oil filter wrench that you trust, you might want to check that you can move the filter prior to draining the sump.
