It would not be honest to not acknowledge that an important safety system is being bypassed. However, knock or pinging is a result of timing, AF mixture, temperature and pressure. Nothing else. Yes, some engines will be more sensitive because of deposits and fules vary, but for a given engine and fuel, the four listed variables are what you need to consider.
Now for a given engine and fuel, compare an Abbott ECU VS a boost controller. The Abbott has higher boost, and for a given veicle, this means higher pressures and temperatures. So whats left? AF mixture and timing. So if Abbott can run at even higher pressures and inlet temperatures than with an MBC, then whats the problem with running with less boost with an MBC?
I have been running a boost controller for a bit over 13 months. Many others have followed. No one is reporting knocking or failures. Yes there were some great flame wars. Too bad that you missed the fun!
David has to make discaimers.
David is also a bit off the mark on the octane issue. Octane measurements in europe are done to a different standard. It is like comparing the two temperature scales. It is confusing that they are close to each other. Take your fuel to europe and have it tested, it would come out 4 or 5 points higher there.
The things that you want to do is remove intake and exhaust restrictions. That is not stressed with the Abbott ECU's because it is nice to think of it as a magic bullet. Reducing these restrictions keeps temperatures down, which will help protect a MBC engine. If you go with an BMC, then you will have to be more concerned with the state of your vehicle maintenace and fuels.
If you want to improve your performance significantly for a minor cost, go with the MBC. If you want to have a lot more than this, the ECU mod is the way to go.
Don't do the MBC without other modes. But you should be doing those same modes even with the ECU.
