Annoying rattles in older NGs - long story, great ending

I've been doing a lot of routine maintenance work on my 1995 900S the last couple of weekends (serpentine belt, center muffler) and have a nice find to report.
I've had annoying 'rattles' (no other word better describes it) for the last year that seem to come from the front of the dash at 30-50 mph. I feared the worst (idler pullies) but found the noise was still there when coasting downhill with the engine off. I also checked the passenger air intake because the inner plastic sheet that acts as a rain drain is kind of loose and makes the same rattle sound when messing with it from outside the car.
Well - on a long trip this weekend I finally slapped the front mudflaps that are right behind the front wheels (stopped the car first) and they vibrate a little, making a fair amount of noise. It doesn't sound anything like the rattle from in the car, but for grins I stuck some napkins (only thing handy) in between the flaps and the car wheel well.
My car sounds new again! No rattles at all, just the whistle from my AC expansion valve (a problem? It has done it since day one). I'll just pretend that its a turbo spooling up until I replace this car with a newer one in about 5 years!
