Help!!! Timing Belt Cover Sucked Into Engine...Huge Repairs Cost!

I am currently driving my second Saab, a 95 900 SE and recently I have encountered a major problem. Somehow the timing belt cover got sucked into the timing belt and that has caused my engine major damage. My car has been maintained exactly to Saab's specifications and I had my timing belt replaced at 65,000. My car has 87000 miles on it so I was not due for another timing belt change until 95000. Although I am not under the regular warranty by Saab, my local service rep at the dealership feels Saab should cover this under their "goodwill" policy. They will not, only offering me $1000 towards the repair or $1500 towards the purchase of a new Saab. For a $5500 service bill, this is pretty insulting to me. On top of it, my service manager told me that since I had my timing belt replaced at 65000, Saab has come out with an improved cover that would not have done what my timing belt cover did. Do you have any ideas for me? How often have you seen this happen with a timing belt cover? Could the cover been installed improperly, causing it to be sucked in? I can't believe that Saab would treat a loyal customer like this. Any ideas that you could share about the problem would be greatly appreciated.
