I bought my first Saab in December 2000. It is a 1996 900-SE (loaded)with only 50k miles. I paid about $13k for it. Here are some of my suggestions for Saab hunting:
1.) Try to take your time. Don't feel like you have to buy the first couple of Saabs that you look at and test drive.
2.) In some ways, buying from a private party is better than a "car lot", unless you are buying a pre-owned (leased) Saab from an authorized dealer. Dealers will be more expensive though, by $1-4k, depending on the condition of the car. One good thing about buying from a dealer is that they should know all potential problems with the car, if any. They will have done most of the regular scheduled maintenance on the car (if it was a lease or customer trade-in).
3.) If you chose to buy a car from a private party, ask the seller if you can take it to a local Saab dealer (or a trusted Saab mechanic) to have the car checked out. I did this and the inspection only cost me $100. Note: I really liked my Saab after first examination. (Suggestion: Don't do this for every car you check out, only the ones you really like.) After the inspection, the local dealer ended up finding a few minor issues with the car. This actually helped me to negotiate the price down by $600.00
I actually bought my car from a private party, a Silicon Valley tech executive type. He had most of the repair and service records for the car, used Mobil 1, and visibly took great care of the car. All good signs. He was also willing to let me have the car looked at by a mechanic.
4.) Always test drive the car. If you don't like a sound the car makes or the way the ride feels, go with your gut feeling and move on. I drove 2 Saabs from a Saab "specialist" lot and found all the cars to have some major problems that could have later created repair nightmares for me.
5.) Go on-line and have the car checked out for any liens/accidents or other recorded problems. There are a few services that check these things out. It will only cost you about $19 for the service (one month of searching). Totally worth the price.
I hope this helps you out. Happy Saab Hunting!!
