Thanks, Bill. Again, I certainly appreciate your honesty and keen advice on these matters.

As noted, I am now in California. I've been here for a couple of months. Before I moved here in April, I had taken my Saab back to the dealer in Des Moines after I purchased it on many occasions for various repairs. I'll give them a call on Monday to see if their records indicate a belt change at any of those times after the 65,000 mile mark (I bought the car at about 58,000). Would they be responsible for taking care of it at any of those times or would I be the one to request such a check?

When I ordered the owner's manual, there was no "Warranty & Service Record" booklet sent with it. Again, it's one of those things where if you don't know such an item exists, how do you know to ask for it?

The argument that Saab has no responsibility because the warranty has expired seems a little tenuous to me -- and for this reason: why would they still provide free service at 95,000 -- long after the warranty has expired?

I'll keep my fingers crossed and be a nice guy in my correspondence with Saab -- that's always been my nature. It just really gripes me because I really DO take care of my car. I love my Saab and have always paid up when it came to getting whatever needed fixed fixed. But when Saab makes such impressive efforts in its manual to warn me about the nickel and dime stuff but fails to REASONABLY inform me of some major consequences surrounding the timing belt issue -- it just seems a little odd, to say the least.

Best wishes,
Steve Berry
